It gives its name to a whole group of Mexican montane shrews, the Sorex saussurei group, which also includes S. altoensis and S. mediopua. Its main range covers much of the Mexican highlands, and there is in addition an isolated population in Guatemala still provisionally assigned to it, pending genetic work to confirm whether it deserves species status of its own.
A small montane shrew, morphologically very similar to S. altoensis and S. mediopua, with which it forms a group that is difficult to identify and can only be resolved by detailed comparison of the skull.
Like other shrews, it is far too small to leave recognisable tracks on most field substrates.
Montane forest across much of the Mexican highlands, with an isolated and taxonomically provisional population in Guatemala.
A widely distributed species throughout the Mexican highlands, with no documented sign of a general decline.

Mammaling is a free app for logging the mammals you find. You record a sighting in a moment — even if it's just a track — your life list grows, and the record becomes available to scientific and conservation projects.
It runs on your phone with nothing to install. If you like, it adds to your home screen like any other app.
