It is one of the mesoamerican rice mice of the most restricted distribution of the whole group, known from a reduced area of the Guerrero Mountains and southern Oaxaca, in southwestern Mexico, since it was described at the beginning of the 20th century. Its taxonomic history has been especially moved: it was considered at different times its own species, sub-species of another rice mouse related, and again its own species, until the recent transfer, in 2024, of the whole group to the new genre it today occupies.
Small-to-medium-sized rodent, red brown fur, moderately large ears and long tail. Practically indistinguishable in the field of other species of the same group of Mesoamerican rice mice, with which it shares a very similar appearance; safe identification requires capture and cranial comparison with reference series.
Footprint with 4 front fingers and 5 rear fingers, 1.5-2 cm rear, indistinguishable in the field from other similar-size sotobosque rodents without capture. Extended feces, 5-7 mm, left scattered by the leaves of the mountain sotobosque where it lives.
Mountain forest with dense sotobosque, in medium and high heights. Distributed in a reduced area of the Guerrero Mountains and the south of Oaxaca, in the southwest of Mexico.
Omnivorous, it feeds on seed, fruit and insect from the sotobosque, like the rest of the species of its group.
Solitary, of nocturnal activity, it moves mainly by the soil of the mountain sotobosque.His reproductive behavior remains very little documented.
Their small area of distribution and the scarcity of specific studies make it difficult to accurately assess their population trends.
