One of the most recent discoveries among the endemic climbing mice of the Oaxacan mountains, Schmidly's Deermouse was formally described in the 21st century and named in honour of a renowned American specialist in North American and Mexican mammalogy. Like the rest of its genus, it spends much of its life climbing through the dense understorey vegetation of cloud forests, aided by a long, prehensile tail used as an extra anchor point among branches and elevated leaf litter. It lives in a very restricted area of the Sierra Madre de Oaxaca, sharing the mountains with several almost identical sibling species from which it can only be reliably distinguished by detailed cranial or genetic analysis. Its recent description highlights how much remains to be discovered about the small mammal diversity of the Mexican mountains.
Small rodent with greyish-brown fur on the back and paler underparts, large, prominent eyes, well-developed ears, and a long prehensile tail. Schmidly's Deermouse is easily confused with other mountain-dwelling species of the same genus in Oaxaca, with which it sometimes shares its habitat; reliable identification almost always requires cranial or genetic analysis due to their extreme external similarity.
Small track, 1.5-2 cm, with 4 fore toes and 5 hind toes, rarely visible given its climbing habits. Small, elongated droppings, 4-6 mm long, scattered amongst low vegetation and elevated leaf litter in the understorey. It constructs spherical grass and moss nests above ground level in dense vegetation or tree hollows, typical of its cloud forest habitat.
Montane cloud forest with dense understorey and abundant epiphytic vegetation, generally between 2000 and 3000 m altitude. Endemic to a very restricted area of the Sierra Madre de Oaxaca in southern Mexico.
Omnivorous, feeding on seeds, fruit, fungi and understorey invertebrates, whilst also exploiting resources available amongst elevated epiphytic vegetation.
Arboreal and adept at climbing, Schmidly's Deermouse moves through low and elevated understorey vegetation using its prehensile tail. It is likely nocturnal, with solitary behaviour that remains poorly documented due to its recent description.
Populations are considered in marked decline due to the ongoing loss of the cloud forest upon which it strictly depends, a mountain ecosystem already naturally restricted and fragmented in the Sierra Madre de Oaxaca.
Deforestation and fragmentation of cloud forest driven by agricultural and livestock expansion, alongside the climate-change-induced altitudinal shift of the humidity conditions required by this ecosystem.
