A Mexican cloud-forest rodent whose identity as a distinct species took over a century to fully resolve. For decades, Chapman's Rice Rat was grouped alongside several almost identical-looking populations scattered across various mountain ranges of Mexico and Central America under a single name, until a 2014 molecular phylogenetic study revealed it was actually a complex of several distinct species. It lives concealed within the dense, damp ground vegetation of the cloud forest—a mid-altitude mountain habitat that forms only under very specific conditions of constant humidity, and which by its very nature occurs in isolated fragments across different Mexican ranges, each harbouring its own combination of species.
A small rodent with dark brown fur on the back and slightly paler fur on the belly, a compact body adapted to moving through dense cloud-forest ground vegetation, and a moderately long tail. Chapman's Rice Rat is easily confused with other species in the same Mesoamerican cloud-forest rodent complex; given its very recent taxonomic resolution, reliable separation often requires genetic analysis.
Small track, 1.5-2 cm, with 4 fore toes and 5 hind toes. Small, elongated droppings, 4-6 mm, left scattered along paths through dense forest-floor vegetation. It builds nests and shelters in hollows beneath fallen logs, roots or moss-covered rock crevices, typical of the damp cloud-forest understorey it inhabits.
Mid-altitude cloud forest with a dense, damp understorey, generally between 1500 and 3000 m in altitude. Chapman's Rice Rat is endemic to cloud-forest fragments in the Sierra Madre Oriental and the mountains of Oaxaca in southern and eastern Mexico.
Omnivorous, feeding on seeds, fruit, fungi and forest-floor invertebrates, taking advantage of the abundant organic matter in the damp understorey.
Terrestrial and probably nocturnal, Chapman's Rice Rat lives concealed within dense cloud-forest ground vegetation. As a species only relatively recently resolved taxonomically, many details of its social and reproductive behaviour are still being documented.
Its populations are considered to be in decline due to the ongoing loss of the cloud forest upon which it depends—a mountain ecosystem particularly sensitive to deforestation and climate change because of its strict reliance on constant ambient humidity.
Deforestación and cloud-forest fragmentation driven by agricultural and livestock expansion, alongside climate-change-induced shifts in the altitudinal band of humidity required by this ecosystem, which progressively reduces the available area of habitat.
